Saw your comment on Crockett's blog and have to ask, what is the 800 club? Does that refer to monthly expenditures?

From Rye on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 11:56:58 from 174.27.56.170

Yes, each missionary has a cost of 400 dollars per month no matter where they serve. It is a real cool opportunity as a family to support them temporally. My kids have saved to help pay for their missions but I hope to contribute enough to let them have some college money when they return home.

From flatlander on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 12:06:16 from 198.207.244.102

I have two sons. The first was a superb missionary, one of the best I have seen or heard of. The second is 17 and facing a lot of challenges right now. So I know both sides of the story. It is great to see all the runners who are supporting missionaries. Heartfelt congratulations on being a member of the 800 club, it speaks volumes for your family.

I work as a building engineer at the Idaho Falls Temple. At times I work rotating shifts, so depending on how I feel those early mornings I might run or I will ride the motorcycle or bicycle. Years ago I raced on bikes, so tell your wife great job on the century ride. Just as in marathons I have had good experiences during century rides and some very unpleasant ones. Does she ride with a group or does she go solo? What does she ride? I purchased a Specialized Roubaix last year and just love it. Too many hobbies!

Just some easy miles to work on a beautiful morning. 50 degrees and no wind and blue skies. Back soreness on my left side. Doesn't feel real good. I hope it works itself out.

Back is still a little tender. Ran home in stifling heat. 88 degrees. Man it just jumps from one extreme to the other.

Hobbled 8 miles this morning after giving birth over the weekend. Two kidney stones saturday morning. I am really sore but felt up to running to work this morning. Well if you can call it running. I was able to pass the stones at home with NO medication which I feel helped me recover quickly. It is amazing how much doctors want to give you medication. I know there is a need for some of it but i believe that being active and eating properly can give you an edge. I may try to run on my lunch break later for a couple of miles....

Got out at lunch around the greenbelt for a quick 3. Lots of people out. Beautiful afternoon. Maybe I'll try this more often to get acclamated to the warmer weather.

OK, we're going to need some details on that one, can't just say that and walk away. At least it was P-Day I hope? I thought missionaries generally rely on the strength of the spirit rather than the arm of man, i.e., who needs a boomerang? On the other hand, why did the rabbit need to go? Was the Taliban involved? So many questions.

My son, who is on the right...is pretty crazy and yes it was a P-day. Where he is serving the membership is a little weak and so they don't get the meals like in some other areas..He said, and I quote," We needed meat, and the Lord provided." I am not for sure about that one. Not sure if he actually ate the rabbit though.....

Hey Joe, you know I live just about an hour and 45 min away from Yellowstone. We are really lucky to live so close. The fires of 1988 really devestated the area but you would not believe how it has rebounded since then. Thick forest and grass. I was constantly blowing my whistle during the hike. We spotted a grizzly there in that area back about 10 years ago and since then the area is so well wooded and lush I can't imagine a better place for the bears...Hey if you ever get a chance to come this way for a vacation..you have a place to park for a day or so before a trip to Yellowstone. If you fly fish this is the perfect place to hang out not to mention a nice cool run.

Nice run this morning. Temps at 43 degrees. Ran with a golden retriever this morning. Hanna was found on the freeway between Pocatello and Fort Hall. My sister picked her up and gave her a bath and cleaned her up. We found the owners and they said that they would be over to pick her up. When they came over they saw how attached we were to the dog and Hanna had been getting out more and more lately, they were afraid that she would get hit one at some piont in time. So we now have two goldens. Hanky is 12 years old and arthritic and now Hanna who is 7. She ran well this morning for 2 miles before I took her back home and finished up. Ok....You purists please don't judge me to harshly.I am putting down 30 easy miles due to my 112 mile bike ride today. I have read lots of conversions on biking to running and I don't normally log bike miles as run miles with those conversions, but with this ride I am going to do that. What a perfect day for it. Got to the Ashton hill in great shape. Felt beat after that though. Recovered nice after that.Enjoyed the flat and then the rollers. Maintained a good pace for the ride. 18.9 for the ride till I had to get up and over to West Yellowstone after riding 95 + miles! Anyway finished and got a ride home from a friend that works up that way. Time to wash the bike up. I believe that my training for this ride was below par. Not enough miles in the saddle. On the flip side I feel with what training I did Iam happy. Gorgeous scenery.

Joe... thanks for the vote with the mileage conversion...Awesome day...though I have a peanut size bump on my achilles..&*()&)**) very tender to walk. Biking is suppose to be easier on the joints than running!

Jeff..Thanks..has your wife had any issues with the achilles in her riding? The last climb going into west yI felt something wierd going on but didn't surface till later that night. It is swollen and tender not what I wanted but I can get through it..

Okay, I know for sure that the swelling has gone down. Still sore but is making some gains. I think a solid week off....so maybe by saturday I will try some light running. The ibuprofen has made the stomach off a bit. Ice is my friend...Actually I have been sleeping with it! My wife has not objected to it. As long as it stays on my side of the bed.

Question from a southerner...do the roads stay snowy and icy all winter making it tough to get traction while running, or does it get plowed and/or melt on the streets/sidewalks where you run? Last year we had a couple days where we actually got 4 inches of snow but the roads were OK to run on after a few hours. Wondering what it's like in Idaho.

From Rye on Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 08:08:37 from 174.27.113.31

During these early storms the roads can be wet and icy for a few days. Normaly after a winter storm passes through it is cold ( 32 or below ) for a few days. November and December storms are like this and we can still get runs in without jeopardizing our health. (broken bones, concussions, humiliation etc...) Jan to the first of March .... you take all the risks ..... Snow and ice along the the road and pathways. If you are dedicated runner in eastern Idaho, it is either the treadmill (&$!/&!$ ) or slip slide and away! Depends on how smart you are and I am not that bright.

Thanks flat ,,, yesterday was crazy, I finished my run at 8:30 and by 1:00 we had 4 inches of snow. We had a funeral that afternoon to. It was beautiful but it got nasty cold! I knew it was going to be a interesting funeral when one of the members of the family walked in the chapel and took a big dip of snuff before sitting down. This makes 10 funerals in 15 months since I was called as bishop. What's interesting is that we have 11 members over ninety and they are doing

great, it's the 80 year olds that are passing away.

From flatlander on Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 11:51:56 from 198.207.244.102

Love the funeral story, I have been telling it all weekend. Sorry you have so many of them, though. When they pile up like that I imagine it is difficult to give proper attention to each one.

Blizzard conditions...... hopefully tomorrow for a run in the snow. It is crazy, roads closed all over the place the last two days. Winds will be blowing 40 to 50 mph with 3 plus inches of new snow today. With the 4 inches yesterday and the 4 to 6 over the weekend it is a mess!

Bought those yaktrax yesterday and wanted to try them out. Windchill was hovering around 15 below zero so I opted against it. Ran this morning with the temps at 2 degrees. Call me stupid I guess. The yaktrax work well. Lots of packed snow and ice and they gripped really well on the snow and did ok on the ice. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Ran in breezy conditions. Still nice for what we have had. Feet got wet today due to the warm temps.

Well, got some bad news.... I had today off so I thought I would get some things done. So the ice along the gutters so I thought I would shovel some snow off the edge of the roof...no no, I didn't fall... well not on purpose. I decided to get off the roof by jumping into a pile of snow that was along our driveway. Yes it was a large pile of snow but not taking into the fact that it had warmed up a bit and the snow became compacted, it did not give like I thought it would. I have done something to my ribs. I am struggling to take a breath of air.... Didn't think I would miss a run from this!!! Hopefully just tweaked something and will only be sore for a day or two.

Yikes! Sounds like bruised or cracked ribs (which I've had). I wasn't a runner at the time though. Avoid twisting and stretching the painful spot if you can and keep it somewhat immobilized. That was my mistake when I had the injury. Good luck, hope you are back soon!

Thanks Joe .. I'm finding that I hurt just about everywhere. The neck, back, and those ribs. I live across the street from the elementary school so I did get some approval yells! It was just a stupid thing to do and now I'm paying for it.

I used to jump off our roof all the time when I was a kid! I'm glad I read your post though, because I am always tempted to do the same thing after I clean our gutters. Seems like it's almost more dangerous to climb down our gate. Hopefully it is just some soreness that will be gone in a day or two.
