Nice easy run on the tm this morning. The last three I picked the pace up a bit and finished strong for me. Good start to the week. The house is back to just the 4 of us now. Hilary is heading to BUYI to finish up her bachelors degree this semester and hopes to get into pharmacy afterwards. Things are certainly different. Happy New Year to all frb's

Is Hilary the missionary? I would hate for her to already be gone again! BYU is close though. I have a niece that is a pharmacist in Vegas and a nephew in law that is just finishing up his last year at the U in pharmacy. It seems like a good thing to go into with the economy. There are still lots of jobs available for pharmacists.

Nice and easy on the TM? Blek!

Burt ...... Don't broadcast the bishop thing.... It's bad for my image! I need all the friends I can get.

Steam8 sorry I'm having issues not chuckling over "steam" since Burt made his last comment on his blog. Yes, Hilary is the missionary and it stinks that she is gone. She has worked in a pharmacy since she was 15. She is pretty sharp and driven. She has been so pleasant at home.

Son was home ill after school, so I ran on the tm while he watched Sponge Bob Square Pants. It was a pretty hard workout today. ( Not watching sponge bob but running ) Did some hill repeats... 1200 meter and 400 recovery (6 miles of hills)and then 4 @ 7:35. I'm tired! Received the travel plans from my sons Mission Home in Michigan today. Looking forward to April!

Had a busy day and didn't get the run in till early evening. So it was the tm workout. Didn't know exactly what I was going to do till I warmed up. Legs felt good so I opted for a hill workout. After a mile warmup I set the incline at 4 and ran 400 meters and then 400 cool down but kept the pace the same which was 8:15. I did that for the rest of the run which was 8.35 miles. I guess that is a speed workout in disguise? Sure felt like it. Runners are funny, 9.35 miles for the run and I'm thinking 10 sounds some much better.......nah... I'm done!...Till tomorrow.

Cool and clear this afternoon with temps around 25 with a slight breeze from the north. I dressed for it this time and had a nice run. I started out running 7:30's and that felt too slow but I stayed with it for most of the run. April 1 is when you can register. The race is the first weekend in October on Saturday. I'm going to give it a shot this year. I got in a couple of years ago, only to get a stress fracture a month before the race.

I couldn't do much of anything the last couple of days. Its was good to get out this morning for a short run. Temps were on the cool side and just a slight breeze may it cold!

I'm thinking that the headache was stressed related and so was the strain in the neck and upper back. I tend to be pretty easy going but had some issues this past weekend that may have put me over the edge. So glad for running. Did some weight training after my run today and that felt great. Hey Preston,

I got my copy of Run Less Run Faster out finally. I bought that last fall and started to read it. With my love of cycling and trying to fit all my hobbies in, I think that I am ready to give this a try and follow the workouts. I'm reading it right now, is there any input that you have for me, or would you just follow to the tee and go from there? I am intrigued with all the positive data that has been collected. I am excited to give it a try for the main reason that I love to cycle, but that has always took backseat with running. I've tried to run 5 to 6 days a week for the most part. Give me your Texas Two Cents worth...

Whoo...Hooo Great Job Rye! I think the RLRF program tries to weed out people on this first workout. These 1 mile repeats are some of the worst of all the training. I was convinced I wouldn't be able to keep up with the future workout after this workout the first time. I found that it got easier :-) My avg. pace the first time around wast 6:19 and it wa a killer! So...we're off and running! My cross-training is going to be very weak this week as I have something going every night. I'll probably not be able to bike until next week.

From I Just Run on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 12:56:54 from 67.79.11.242

Hey Rye, you will improve. Like I said, I think the RLRF program throws in that first run to try and weed people out. You came very close to the pace and that's without much speed work before.

What's up with the Texas jokes today...even DL and RT are ribbing me about Texas ... Well, I guess we do have a lot to brag about...including the Spurs !!!

From Rye on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 17:44:14 from 174.27.116.87

Hey TexasLindsey.....the RLRF is pretty crazy. It is based on the theory of 3 and 2...... 3 running days and 2 cross training days in between running days. Basically to recover from the hard days of running. First day of the week is usually mile repeats or 800 m repeats. Wednesday run is a tempo day and Friday is a long run but is a fast paced run. All in all it's pretty high intensity running three days a week. It has you peaking at 16 weeks. Do a google search on it and if your interested go to the website and look at some of the charts. I love to cycle so this program is exciting to me for that reason. I can feel in my cross training days with cycling.

Looks like a good workout to me! Look how fast your warmup and cooldown miles are. I think we both have a good start to the program. You will get stronger after a few workouts. Is your plan to cross-train tomorrow and run on Friday? That would give you Sat & Sun off for rest...?

From Rye on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 15:58:46 from 174.27.95.90

I think that's what I'll do. Though I might have to do something on Saturday. 2 days rest seems like too long. What are your thoughts?

From I Just Run on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 16:10:21 from 67.79.11.242

What works best for me is a cross-training day on Thurs, rest Friday and run long on Sat Morning....but I'm old...! I need that extra rest day. If I run my long run on Friday I'm tired from the Wed run, if I don't run my long run until Sun I'm too tired on monday for the repeats.

This week is really messed up for me and my daughter is in town. I am trying to run with her all I can. My plan is 2-3 easy tomorrow (with Callie), rest Friday, run a local 5K race Sat morning and then finish out the 13 mile long run as best I can.

Felt like running this evening and so I did! It was dark so I opted for the tm and set the incline at 1 and away I went. Mile and a half warm up and then the scheduled tempo run. I promise you will see results. I ran a 1:30 half marathon 11 weeks into the training. There would have been no way for me to run that without the training. I didnt do as well as I wanted on my marathon but I believe it was completely operator error in pacing.

Ah, the old summer to-a-days. Great tempo run after a strong bike ride! Now rest for your long run on Saturday.

Don't worry about the intervals, the speed will come, just wait and see.

I thought I would have a better run this morning than  I did. I finished, but it didn't feel very good. I had the idea to run this and then do the Skiller 5k which is a fundraiser scholarship run for a young man that passed away unexpectedly a few years ago. My legs felt like concrete after my run so I just helped out. Hoping that I have a good recovery day tomorrow.... Last weeks 13 miler at a faster pace was a breeze compared to this weeks run.

Way to push through and finish strong. Your splits are very consistent. Mine varied about a minute mainly due to my hills I guess. Don't get discouraged, this is supposed to be hard :-) you'll have some good runs and some not so good. get some good rest today and tomorrow and we'll be ready to tear up the track on Monday.

Oh, BTW, I'm pretty trashed too :-)

I think the problem was selling your motorcycle, they are faster. You guys should just quit running and go to the gym, that's what I do now.

Great workout! If I were you I would rest today and run your tempo on Wed if your legs are a little tired.

IJR I am pleasantly surprised when I hit

the interval goals. I have to say it was hard

but doable. I rode my bike to work today, but it was a pretty easy ride. I wish that I had ran earlier in the morning. My legs feel like lead in the mornings when I do the workout later in the afternoon. Thanks again for the email. You pulled me through this last one! It's sure different without running any junk miles. Everything is so focused.

From I Just Run on Tue, Jun 05, 2012 at 08:34:17 from 67.79.11.242

I was very excited to see your results! Stepping out to do some of the workouts is a little intimidating but when you accomplish the goal it feels really good. As you get further into the training you'll notice your legs more and more recovered and ready for the next run.

I'm not following the cross-training schedule very well, I've just got so much going on. I didn't get home from the game until after midnight so I slept in this morning. I've got to practice roping this evening (I'm trying to get ready for an event on the 23rd) so my cross-training will probably be only one day this week. Hopefully I'll get into a routine soon.

See ya wednesday for the Tempo run!

Sorry, I think I messed you up on the distance. I ocasionally tack on a little the the end of these workouts if I feel I can.

I'm not looking forward to our long run, it's so hot and humid here I really get drained after about an hour.

When will you run your long run?

IJR I hope that it goes better than last weeks run. I'll be running in the morning. You would love the mornings in Idaho. 40 to 50 degrees and very little wind. Drink lots of water! Had to run mondays run on tuesday.... funeral, work, and just totally drained from the day got to me. I feel like crawling under a rock some days..... The funeral was quite difficult. 34 year old mother of 2 young girls had too much to drink and jumped out of a car. The automobile was traveling 60 mph.....lots of tension between husband and her family...anyways back to the run today. I managed to complete another interval workout! That's always a great relief to me. Don't know if they are getting easier, but I am able to complete them and not be totally wiped out. Guess that is good news. I for the most part hit the goals, give or take a few seconds... Off work for the rest of the week!  I need it!

I noticed that this workout called for 400m recovery between each 1000. When I set it up on my watch I set it for 200m recovery..... Dang.... not looking at the fine print.

Nice running, right on the mark! I think speed work is harder on the Dreadmill. Long slow is okay but running fast just seems harder. Did you ramp up 1% on the TM, I've been told to do that to make it more like road running.

I hop this is a sign of you feeling better!? Will you run your Tempo Run today? As you saw my week is a little out of order but I think I will be able to run my Tempo tomorrow morning.

Have you noticed the Blog is like a ghost town, nobody is saying much.

May try to do it tomorrow. Don't know how well I will run but I will give it a go! Real close to the target pace for this workout. Beat avg by 1 second!!!!

First run that I had to cut short with the RLRF Program. Between the family Suburban catching fire in Mesquite, and my daughter tearing her acl in her knee, I had other things on my mind than getting my long run in. This run was done on the tm due to our 14 year old Golden Retriever being ill and we are in the process of dealing with the fact that if she doesn't die shortly, we will have to put her down.....via vet. Three of the members of the family are in Long Beach at the National Jumprope Competition, so they are away from the difficulties of watching a dog suffer with old age. I have missed my wife this week due to the fact that she has been with the jumprope team helping and judging the competition. She is always a great support! My daughters knee has been a struggle. Her major is in Health Science with a minor in Dance. She had to medically drop out of these two classes due to her injury, and was all set to graduate this July so I'm not sure how this will all play.

Back to the run. This was a bummer that I couldn't finish this one. Felt the runners high for a change. avg pace for the run was at 8:01. Felt like I could keep up real easy and had plenty left in the tank.

Sorry Ryan for all the difficulties! We were just studying in our Bible study yesterday about hardships and asking the question "Is every hard thing in our lives a "testing of our faith"? Looks like you've got plenty of that going on right now.

Don't worry about not quite finishing the run, you can make it up by running 28 on your next long run (just kidding!). One shorted run is not going to have any effect on the overall training plan. Hope you can get off to a good start this week :-) See you on the track!

Family is back from Long Beach and I have National Champion Jumproper once again. Great performance from her and team. So the fishing report is this. Pretty mediocre. Stones have already moved through the canyon and all the fish we caught we stuffed to the gills. Well, I can tell you that, even though I haven't met your daughters, they are proud of you too... and you may already know that.

My Dad is an athlete, too. He had two daughters. He played baseball at TCU in college and then he went on to be ranked as one of the top 5 best handball players in Texas. He's played handball all my life, even now... When I was in college at UT, he'd come in town to visit me and play handball with some of the UT handball team ... and BEAT THEM!

My Dad taught me how to be a champion just by example. I'm not as good of a runner as he was at his sports... but I don't give up and that makes me proud!

Rye, looking at what you did this week... your workouts, your times, your determination... Oh, yes, your daughters and all your children are proud... I'm sure more than they even can express! And the influence of what you do... it's going to have a lifetime effect on them.

Ran on the tm today. Watched the Terry Fox story on Netflix. I remembered a little bit about that story when I was in high school. He attempted to run across Canada during the early summer and fall of 1980. He lost his leg due to cancer when he was 20 and wanted to do something to help fight cancer. He raised a ton of money and tragically lost his life to cancer before finishing his quest. He was a determined young man with a lot of will. Great story.

From Rye on Mon, Oct 15, 2012 at 10:23:44 from 75.174.49.224

IJR....The racing plans..... good question! I don't want to belly ache and moan.....but with work, school, and my church calling, it's been difficult at best to try to train for a race. Seems like every weekend there is something pulling on me. It I can just maintain fitness at the moment I am happy. Hopefully in 2013 things might slow down some for me. I should be finished with my degree, and that should help! I'm taking 18 credits every term so things are hectic but worth it I guess. Church calling is about 15 plus hours a week and sometimes I have very little to do with the scheduling and things that come up that I have to take care of. Okay....enough crying....there is no crying in running!

From Rye on Sat, Dec 08, 2012 at 11:19:25 from 75.174.51.108

IJR... The shoes are Saucony Guide5. Seem to be ok. They had a great price tag at Roadrunner sports so I picked them up.

Having me inform you on speed is a little like me telling you how to rope......but I can give you some information that Jeff gave us the other night. It had a lot to do with tm running and making it fun and improving your form and speed. Driving your legs (knees) forward with a quicker cadence and not slapping the treadmill will provide good form and speed. Setting the speed on the tm will help you know what that speed actually feels like. If you noisy on the mill, your form and turnover

needs work. Didn't have my recorder there but I

think that is basically the theory. Maybe if Jeff reads this he can chime in. Jeff is an incredibly friendly guy. He is very willing to assist other runners.

Good running after a hard day yesterday!

Glad you bounced back quickly, speed work always kills me. Those were great repeats too, by the way.

Easy there Rye. You're borderline cussing.

IJR Slowjoe.... Thanks for helping my self confidence....knowing that you guys could run circles around helps......just a little.

Burt thanks for nothing. I can't let my hair down anywhere....including this blog!

"Let your hair down"...Ha Ha...you don't have enough to let down :-) but I have no room to talk :-(

From Rye on Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 19:23:33 from 71.220.181.226

From I Just Run on Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 07:41:49 from 67.79.11.242

Had some bad news yesterday. My wifes sister passed away in Pocatello. Great gal that has been wheelchair bound for 50 years. She came down with spinal meningitis at 3 years old and never recovered. She has blessed the lives of so many. Grateful to have known her these past 30 years. Had family and friends drop by this evening and this run was divided into 3 seperate runs. Friends gave me hugs in my sweaty running clothes. They are just great! I will have the opportunity to conduct the funeral this Saturday.

Sorry to hear about your sister's loss.

Jeff... IJR thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Interesting prospective this past week. My boss lost his mother at 97, a high school friends son past away at 17, the tragedy in Ct, and my sister in law death. Different circumstances yet one thing in common, death. It's all part of a great plan for us. Our Saviors love for us is eternal. Thanks fellow friends and runners.

Ran some hill repeats on the tm this late morning. Cold and slick outside due to Idaho's winter. Thought I would play it safe today.

Those TMs are definitely good for hill repeats. Probably something I should be doing more of. Nice run.

Our snow and ice is starting to melt today...back to normal Oklahoma weather soon. We can only take Idaho weather in very small doses.

From flatlander on Sat, Dec 29, 2012 at 12:54:28 from 76.31.26.153

I think TM are becoming approved training devices for elite types like yourself, according to this RW article:

Joe...slow doses over a long stretch of time qualifies!

Flatlander.... You flatter me.......good article though. Jeff Shadley spoke at a clinic a few weeks ago about winter running and he had some great thoughts on tm running. Trying to be better with my training.
